Juicy and flavorful chicken burgers made with homemade teriyaki sauce!
We do love our chicken around here.

Don't get me wrong, beef is good, but, we don't eat that much red meat.  So, instead of ground beef, I cook alot with ground turkey and ground chicken, even ground pork.  It's a flavorful substitute and works out better in the fat content department.

These burgers are one of our favorite ways to get that chicken we love so much.

I originally shared these way back in 2011 and wanted to give them another share. Since the original post, I've changed up the recipe a little bit.

First, I use homemade teriyaki sauce for them.  Yes, store bought will work too.  But, honestly, I don't use teriyaki sauce for a huge amount of cooking.  So, making it in a smaller amount just works better for me.  Plus, homemade is just better, right?

Originally, the burgers simply had teriyaki sauce mixed into the meat, then, cooked.  Now, in addition to that, we are cooking the burger in teriyaki sauce too.  Much more flavorful!  That being said, if you do have an eater in your family that doesn't want it cooked in the sauce too, you can just skip that step.  They are still delicious burgers, either way.

You can also chose whether to make these as burgers or sliders.  Same recipe, but, sliders are smaller or "mini" burgers.  This recipe will make 4 regular size burgers or 8 sliders.  Your preference, but, the cooking times a little different.

Ingredients (4 burgers or 8 sliders)
  • 1 lb ground chicken
  • 1 cup teriyaki sauce, divided ( store bought or below recipe)
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tsp green onions
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs
  • salt/pepper, to taste preference
  • 1 TBSP canola oil, for pan
  • hamburger buns
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 2 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 TBSP honey
  • 1 tsp minced garlic
In a saucepan, whisk together soy sauce, water, red pepper flakes, minced garlic and ginger.
Bring mixture to a boil, then, reduce heat to simmer.
Add cornstarch in small bowl, remove 2 TBSP of heated mixture and whisk into cornstarch until smooth. Add back into saucepan and let mixture simmer until thicken. This should take approx 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in honey.
Keep in covered container in refrigerator. Use within a week or two.
In a bowl, combine ground chicken, teriyaki sauce, egg white, green onion, breadcrumbs and salt/pepper. Mix until well combined.
Form into 4 burgers or 8 mini burgers for sliders.
Heat oil in a large skillet.
Cook burgers in skillet for approx 5 minutes on each side. Just to get brown.
Then add remaining teriyaki into pan and coat burgers.
Continue cooking for 5-8 minutes or until cook thoroughly.
If you are cooking sliders, cook each for approx 3 minutes on each side, then, add remaining teriyaki sauce and cook another 5 minutes.
Serve on buns with desired garnish.

  1. We don't eat a ton of red meat in our house either. Maybe 2 times a month here. I use a lot more chicken and turkey! Love these little sliders!
