A few months ago, I made Vanilla Orange Pull Apart Bread and fell in love.

In love with frozen bread dough.  Yeah, that’s a weird thing to say, agreed.

However, it’s true. I do kinda love the stuff.  It’s  convenient, budget friendly and completely, utterly versatile. You can do all sorts of stuff with it, besides, of course, just make a nice loaf of bread.

I usually pick up a pack of 5- 1 lb loaves and store them in freezer. That way, we are never low on bread or a pack of dough, to make just about anything with it.

Now, I know! Homemade dough is best.  I agree.  However, I do live in a real world with real kids, deal with real life and a real life crazy schedule. So, sometimes, grabbing a loaf of frozen bread dough is not going to weigh down on my conscience that much. It shouldn’t for you either.

So, with a loaf of that frozen bread dough, I made soft pretzel bites.

These bites are so addicting and fabulous. Of course, we are also dunking them in some cheese..making them even more. Soft and fluffy on the inside with a salty, nicely brown outside.

Honestly, it’s just an extremely yummy thing to make.

Yield: 24-30 bites

Soft Pretzel Bites with Cheddar Cheese Dip

SOFT PRETZEL BITES WITH CHEDDAR CHEESE DIP from Table for Seven

Soft and salty pretzel bites with a creamy, cheese dipping sauce.

Prep Time 2 hours 30 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 2 hours 50 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf (1 lb) frozen bread dough
  • 6 cups water
  • 2 TBSP baking soda
  • coarse salt
  • 1 egg, plus water for egg wash

FOR CHEESE DIP:

  • 2 TBSP flour
  • 2 TBSP butter
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • salt/pepper to taste preference

Instructions

  1. Let bread dough sit and room temperature and thaw completely. This will take approx 2-3 hours.
  2. Once thawed, roll out dough into a rectangle. Then, roll dough into a long rope ( approx 20-24 inches long).
  3. Cut rope into bite size pieces ( approx 1/2 inch to 1 inch in size).
  4. In a large pot, bring 6 cups of water to a boil. Add in baking soda.
  5. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line a flat rimmed baking sheet with foil. Then, spray foil with non stick cooking spray.
  6. Boil each piece of dough in baking soda water for 1 minute. The dough will expand in the water.
  7. Remove dough from the water with a slotted spoon and place on prepared baking sheet.
  8. Whisk together egg and 1 TBSP of water.
  9. Brush each piece of dough ( that has been boiled) with egg wash, then, sprinkle top with coarse salt.
  10. Bake for 10-20 minutes or until brown. Cooking time may vary, depending on the size of your bites.

FOR CHEESE DIP:

  1. Melt butter in a medium saucepan. Stir in flour. Cook for about a minute Whisk in milk slowly. Add salt/pepper. Cook until thicken.
  2. Turn off heat. Add in cheese and stir until melted

One of our favorite things to eat at our favorite bar is their pretzel bites. Since they’ve been closed we’ve been missing them, so when I saw this recipe I was very excited. I had some frozen dough in the freezer, actually left over from Thanksgiving, (believe it or not) and we gave it a try tonight. They were perfect! Thank you!

I made these for my family and they were all eaten! I only had Rhode's frozen dinner rolls so I thawed 1 lb worth of those. I didn't roll them out, just cut them in half with scissors and rolled into a ball before dropping them into the water. I brushed with melted butter when done. They were perfect!

Yum! My family loves my homemade soft pretzels, so I know they'd love these...everything's better bite-sized anyway. And I really love the idea of homemade cheese sauce made with actual...cheese. ;) So glad I hopped over when I saw you featured at #WonderfulWednesday!
